Class Descriptions

Below is a brief description of the types of classes offered at His Masterpiece Dance. If you have any questions regarding the curriculum or which classes are best for you or your student, please reach out to us!

*Ages listed are only for reference - determination of readiness for the class is at the discretion of the instructor. Please discuss your child’s options with the instructor.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT (ages 3-6)

​

  • Introduces students to basic dance and movement skills in an environment of creative exploration and play.

  • Age and developmentally-appropriate activities for young movers are based in the elements of dance.

  • Students develop creativity and self-expression while learning body control and classroom etiquette.

​BALLET (ages 5+)

​

  • A foundational study for most all forms of dance.

  • Students learn the techniques and traditions of the Russian (Vaganova) style of classical ballet through exercises at the barre and center floor.

  • French terminology and movement vocabulary are emphasized along with anatomical and kinesiological discussions aiding in the proper execution of movements.

  • Different levels are offered depending upon age and technique level.

POINTE (ages 13+)

​

  • For advanced dancers at the discretion of the instructor.

  • Dancing en pointe requires several years of technical ballet training in order to develop the physical strength, musculature, and balance to safely execute movements on the tips of one’s toes.

  • Classes focus on learning proper body placement and carriage while executing steps and combinations at the barre and center floor.

MODERN (ages 9+)

​

  • A form of dance that grew out of a movement to return dance to a more “natural” state rather than the “confining” positions and patterns of ballet.

  • Students will learn various styles based on the techniques of modern dance pioneers such as Limón, Horton, and Graham.

  • Emphasis is on floor work, manipulation of the spine and torso, and the give and take relationship with gravity.

  • Different levels are offered depending upon age and technique level.

JAZZ (ages 6+)

​

  • A highly stylized and energetic form of dance whose roots can be found in traditional African dance, social dances of the 1900s, and popular music.

  • Emphasis is on isolations of body parts and stylized variations of leaps, jumps, and turns. 

  • Borrows much of its basic movement vocabulary from ballet.

  • Different levels are offered depending upon age and technique level.
